L2S Programme

Scottish Swimming's L2S programme has been developed to set national approved standards of swimming teaching across Scotland.

Each of the 8 levels take children through carefully designed and progressive stages that build awareness and confidence in an aquatic environment through fun, games and instruction.

The L2S programme introduces basic movement skills that lay the foundations for future stroke development.  These include an introduction to the aquatic environment, safe entries and exits, aquatic breathing, streamlining, balance, buoyancy, rotation, orientation, sculling and treating water.

The L2S programme then introduces and builds the skills required to achieve proficiency in all four swimming strokes; frontcrawl, backcrawl, breaststroke and butterfly, as well as many other aquatic skills based on achieving progress along the Swimmer Pathway.

We want children to enjoy the pleasures of aquatic activity, and to develop the confidence and independence that learning to swim can help to benefit.

To compliment the programme and to help track development, the L2S programme has its own swimmer logcard, which enables the teach to provide valuable feedback to the parent.

These waterproof and durable log cards are available with stickers to mark the levels achieved by the swimmer.

Progress Certificates are available at each of the 8 stages of the Learn to Swim Programme, and are aimed at providing an incentive to those swimmers who have not completed all of the criteria in any stage within the programme.

The certificate includes a check list on the reverse where the teachers can identify the criteria achieved in line with the recommended 5 stage assessment process recommended by Scottish Swimming, providing the parent/guardian with a clear indication of the progress made by the swimmer, and where they may need additional practice out-with the lesson time.
