• To provide a structured framework to enable learning and self discovery to take place in safety.
• To provide the adult with the knowledge of the correct handling techniques to enable basic swimming movements and skills to take place.
• To provide a programme which takes into account the relationship between development and performance in the water.

• Perform the following safe entries (with manual assistance): (1) Sit and Swivel (2) Steps and (3) Sit and Fall.
• Demonstrate extended arm tows (prone & supine), maintaining flat body position, with minimal support encouraging a kicking action.
• Demonstrate a two handed prone hold, with the child held to one side of adult, to allow free arm action.
• Permit water to be poured over face.
• Submerge mouth and nose and blow bubbles.
• Float in different shapes with aids.
• Propel independently either prone or supine, incorporating arm and leg action, using aids and no manual assistance.
• Demonstrate a safe exit via the steps (with or without assistance).

• Children should be 16 months - 2 1/2 years.
• Children should be under the supervision of an adult in the water.
