About Swimming

Swimming is one of the most inclusive sporting disciplines in Scotland, with a huge, excuse the pun, pool of potential thanks to the excellent work done over the years to encourage so many of us to learn to swim.

Competitive swimming is categorised by both stroke (breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle) and distance (usually 50m, 100m, 200m, although freestyle also has 400m, 800m and 1500m).  Competitions are either held in a 25m pool (Short Course Competition) or 50m pool (Long Course Competition).

Because there is such a natural progression from recreational swimming, competitive action takes place at a local, regional, national and international level with categories in many different age groups.

At Scottish Swimming we are here to help everybody realise their potential. If you are ready to take the step up from recreational swimming, we can help you find a club and access support;  if you're further along your competitive journey, we can assist you in realising your potential through specialised support and coaching.

Whatever your goal, we'll do everything we can to help you reach it.
