Scottish Open Water Championships-24 July 2010

The British Gas Scottish Open Water Swimming Championships took place on Saturday 24th July 2010, at Lochore Meadows Country Park in Fife.

With 78 swimmers entered in individual races and 10 relay teams this represented a record entry for the event.  This included entries from some English clubs and 12 swimmers representing clubs from Belgium.

The men's events saw Stephen Waterhouse (City of Leeds) and Mark Deans (City of Glasgow) renewing their rivalry and finishing 1st and 2nd in both the 5 km and 2 km events.  In each case they were racing side by side but it was Waterhouse who was to prevail with a winning margin of 1 second on both occasions.  Konstantinos Grammenos from Edinburgh University took third place in the 5 km while James Leitch collected the bronze in the 2 km.

The women's 5 km was won by Alice McCall (Wigan BEST) who built up a lead of 1½ minutes over the pack that comprised the five leading Scottish competitors.  Helen McRoberts (Warrender Baths) won the sprint from the finishing buoy just edging out Ishbel Rodger (Livingston) to take the silver medal overall and the gold medal for the fastest Scottish competitor.  Only 12 seconds covered the leading five Scots after more than 1 hour of racing.

In the 2 km race Marnie Stewart (Warrender Baths) broke free from the leading pack to take the victory and was followed home by Megan Donnelly (Milngavie and Bearsden) and Ishbel Rodger.
