Learn to Swim

Adult and Child

The Adult and Child Swimming programme is a modern resource which can be used flexibly to help all swimming providers offer a valuable water based experience to children aged around 6 months and over with their adult helpers.

Learn to Swim badges

With four levels (Tadpole, Frog, Duckling and Otter) and two complimentary distance awards (Cygnet and Swan), the programme will lead you through tasks and activities to provide children with their first experience of a water environment whilst fully supported by an adult. Each level can be used for any age, and has a set of criteria for each child to achieve; on achieving this they can gain awards to record and reward their accomplishments. For further information on the awards criteria, please visit our awards section within the download area of the website.

The programme is based on sound education principles combined with up to date thinking in skill acquisition and the development of children. It will lead you through all the areas of knowledge essential to teachers and swimming providers, including advice, supports, pool programming, awards and grouping. The key to using the adult and child resource is training and flexibility. Adapt activities to suite your requirements and if in doubt - contact us.

Aims

The aims of the Adult and Child Swimming Programme are:

  1. Promoting national standards of swimming and swimming teaching in Scotland.
  2. Establishing standardisation of contents and methods in Scotland.
  3. Establishing clear outcomes for each stage of development.
  4. Providing stimulating challenges and experiences for children and helpers.
  5. Providing teachers with detailed resources for lessons.
  6. Offering Learn to Swim providers with detailed resources for planning.

The Adult and Child Swimming Programme is needed to underpin the National Learn to Swim Programme (aimed at swimmers aged around 5 years and over) by ensuring that children under 5 years are progressively taught important life skills in a water based environment leading into the National programme.
