Swim Edinburgh announces 25k investment from British Swimming

Swim Edinburgh today announced a 25k investment from British Swimming to support the city’s aspiring performance swimmers. Swim Edinburgh involves University of Edinburgh, Warrender Baths Club, Heart of Midlothian and Inverleith and aims to establish a world class centre of excellence for the delivery of performance swimming through a unique club based partnership. British Swimming joins Scottish Swimming in investing in the programme aiming to enhance the daily training environment for the city’s performance swimmers, based at the Royal Commonwealth Pool. This comes on the back of the recent success of Warrender Bath’s Craig Benson and University of Edinburgh’s Craig Rodgie, both securing spots on the British Olympic and Paralympic Team for London 2012.

Michael Scott, Performance Director British Swimming, said: “This is an exciting partnership that British Swimming is pleased to be involved with. And with the collective efforts of all partners will provide an improved daily training environment for the swimmers and coaches.”

Rachel Steven, Chair of Swim Edinburgh, said: ”This partnership is designed to raise the bar for performance athletes across the City of Edinburgh. The investment will provide the skills of a sports scientist to work in conjunction with coaches and swimmers, to ensure that the swimmers have every opportunity to perform and deliver improved results at world-class levels.”

The Royal Commonwealth Pool, where the agreement was signed today, will host the Scottish Gas National Open Swimming Championships that take place from Thursday 28 June to Sunday 1 July. As one of the major aquatics competitions in Britain, the event welcomes over 630 swimmers from all corners of the United Kingdom. Live results from the event will be posted on Scottish Swimming’s newly established Twitter live stream @scotswimlive, and further information can be found at www.scottishswimming.com/championships
