Whilst Britain’s elite swimmers will be competing at the Olympic Games, the next generation of talented swimmers will be heading to the US Open in Indianapolis looking to gain valuable race experience at the end of their competitive season.
With their sights firmly set on Rio 2016 the youngsters will be looking to lay a marker down before their summer break.
“As a nation we have been very strong at European Junior level but there is a big gap from there to the senior international competitions,” said Mark Perry, British Swimming Development Coach.
“Within the development programme we have been looking at how we can bridge that gap by giving our younger swimmers the chance to compete at more high quality senior meets, to make the transition easier.”
US Open will be the second of such meets and the team of 23 swimmers will include European Junior Champions Molly Renshaw (Derventio Excel) who won gold in the 200m Breaststroke and in-form Matthew Johnson (City of Sheffield) who took home three individual medals.
“As we look to the start of the next quad plan, this event will give the swimmers the opportunity to experience a high level competition,” said Perry, “It will also give them the chance to set new targets as they aim for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and beyond to Rio 2016.”
