The new Scottish Swimming Learn to Swim programme has been designed following an independent review of its predecessor’s performance, the Bank of Scotland Learn to Swim Programme 1999.

The purpose of the new programme is to set national standards for the teaching of swimming, whilst ensuring quality in its delivery through a supported network of swimming teachers and coaches. Based around the latest principles in the teaching and coaching of children, including Long Term Athlete Development, the criteria at each level has been specifically developed to encourage skill acquisition and the basic motor skills required for all aquatic disciplines: swimming, diving, water polo, open water swimming and synchronised swimming.
The Learn to Swim Programme now consists of 8 progressive levels and covers the following key stages of development: safety, fun and play, entries and exits, floating, streamlining, breathing, sculling, development of the 4 competitive strokes, kick and pull techniques and an introduction to early endurance practices.
The Learn to Swim is an ideal resource for delivery within a swim school lesson scheme, be this a private, public or a voluntary organisation. The programme not only gives teachers tips on how to plan lessons, and conduct classes it can also assist teachers with the new 5 stage assessment process. The Learn to Swim also has clear links with the Scottish Swimming Adult and Child programme and the National Swimming Awards.
The Scottish Swimming Learn to Swim Programme sets the National standards for swimming in Scotland, ensuring a fun, challenging and consistent approach to swimming for the swimmer, teacher, coach and parent.
