Recruitment & Retention

Welcome to the Volunteer Recruitment & Retention page of the website.

Recruitment
Anybody can become a volunteer. Each individual has a wealth of skills, attributes and experience that can be used in volunteering.

All clubs have a variety of helpers who assist with the overall organisation and running of the club, however we realise there is a shortage of volunteers out there.  The majority of clubs recruit volunteers from swimmers parent however there are other routes for recruiting volunteers available.  Why not try local colleges, universities or even high schools?  More and more students are looking for volunteering opportunities as this looks good on their CVs, and provides them with experience of working within an organisation.  Your local Volunteer Centre is another avenue to try.  Click here http://www.volunteerscotland.org.uk/contactUs.aspx to find out where your nearest one is.

Scottish Swimming has a Recruitment & Selection Policy which is available in the Child Protection Downloads section of the website.  This provides you with best practice that Scottish Swimming would like clubs to adopt regarding the recruitment of volunteers.

Retention
Once a volunteer has been recruited you have to look at how to retain them.  The level and type of support that a volunteer needs changes throughout his/her lifecycle see below.

Communication is they key to find out what your volunteers are looking for from the club; do they need training or mentoring, or do they want to move into a different role?  Volunteering is a two way process, it’s about what the volunteer can do for the club but also what the club can do for the volunteer.
Volunteering opportunities can be advertised in Splashnews and on the website.  If you have any volunteer opportunities, would like to volunteer within Scottish Swimming, or would like further information on any of the above get in touch with Eilidh McCall, VDM on e.mccall@scottishswimming.com or phone 01786 466520.
