The East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) is a performance swim team composed of swimmers from three clubs, Haddington, Musselburgh and Tranent.  In recent years the team has gone from strength to strength producing multiple medallists at district, national and age group championships as well as the Paralympics and Youth Commonwealth Games.

Swim team members have represented Scotland and Great Britain, secured Scottish records and one ELST swimmer represented Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth games in Glasgow.

ELST have formed a very effective partnership with East Lothian Council, Enjoy Leisure, Scottish Swimming and sportscotland to support the development of our talented young athletes.

ELST have recently appointed a new head coach in Bruce Halloran to drive the team forward in the next phase of its development.  Following Bruce’s elevation to the head coach role, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic assistant coach to work in the programme and continue our stated aim of producing young swimmers who meet their potential.  The assistant coach will lead the coaching of our development athletes in the squad with the aim of progressing these swimmers into the higher ELST squads.

The Strategic Aims of ELST are:

  • To develop a local sustainable swimming structure that is affordable for all;
  • Provide a supportive environment to allow swimmers to develop their abilities;
  • Provide the opportunity for anyone in East Lothian who would like to develop their swimming to regional/national and  international competition level to do so;
  • Develop our athletes to their maximum potential;
  • Build one of Scotland leading swim teams.

The success of the team is based on an excellent professional coaching structure and highly committed athletes who are supported in turn by dedicated volunteer administrators and excellent partner support.

The key attributes required for the ELST assistant coach role are:

  • UKCC Level 2 or equivalent professional experience – with the ambition to achieve Level 3 if not already done so
  • Ability to motivate and encourage swimmers in all squads, as well as deliver a high quality program to those aspiring to regionals, nationals and beyond.
  • Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with swimmers, committee, parents, feeder clubs and other key stakeholders.
  • Ability to formulate training and competition programs
  • Commitment to attend appropriate meets throughout the season
  • Good administration skills
  • Work proactively in promoting swimming in East Lothian, with regular visits to the feeder clubs.
  • Support the head coach in delivering a quality programme across all squads

Enhanced PVG will be carried out on preferred candidates

The Assistant Coach role is a part time role (6 pool sessions and up to 2 land sessions per week) and will be offered initially on a two year fixed term contract.

The successful applicant will report to ELST Head Coach.

Remuneration will be on the scale £8K to £10K with annual progression against agreed performance targets.

How to apply

Candidates are asked to submit a CV and covering letter stating their suitability against the key attributes required to Stephen Lissaman at lissaman@john-lewis.com

Candidates who wish to be considered for the combined post are asked to submit a single application to both ELST and TASC, stating that they would like to be considered for the combined role, and making sure their suitability against the key attributes of each role is addressed separately in the covering letter.

The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 29 August 2014 with interviews to take soon thereafter.

ELST will not engage the services of anyone who does not have the right to work in the UK.
