East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) is a performance swim team composed of swimmers from three clubs, Haddington, Musselburgh and Tranent. In recent years the team has gone from strength to strength producing multiple medallists at district, national and age group championships as well as the Paralympics and Youth Commonwealth Games. Swim Team members have represented Scotland and Great Britain, secured Scottish and British records and we had one swimmer represent Scotland at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

ELST have formed a very effective partnership with East Lothian Council, Enjoy Leisure, FES, Scottish Swimming and Sportscotland to support the development of our talented young athletes. ELST has around 80 swimmers and trains in a number of pools in East Lothian with a weekly session at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. ELST are now seeking a new head coach to drive the team forward in the next phase of its development. With a talented group of swimmers in place, supported by swimmers feeding in from the clubs, we are looking for a highly motivated and committed head coach to lead the programme and continue our stated aim of producing young swimmers who meet their potential.

Flexible working is essential with a requirement for early morning, evening, and weekend coaching sessions in addition to weekend competitions. Working with the Management Committee you will ensure the team delivers on its vision and values. Our vision and values as a team are: “To be a sustainable and successful composite swim team, which continuously strives for excellence and encourages our swimmers, coaches, and volunteers to maximise their potential.

To do this we will …

• Provide a professional and quality swim programme that is inclusive, friendly, and fun

• Support our swimmers in applying a growth mindset to their development, taking ownership of their performances, reviewing goals, and building resilience by embracing challenges as learning opportunities

• Encourage hard work and a competitive attitude in our swimmers, celebrating their achievements as well as promoting team spirit and sportsmanship

• Support the personal development of our coaching team and our volunteers

• Promote the importance of respect, trust, and co-operation across the whole team (swimmers, coaches, and parents / volunteers)

• Work positively with our Home Club partners to maintain a sense of belonging for our current swimmers and ensure there is an effective development pathway for future swimmers.”

Key tasks for the coaching contractor are:

• Provide swimming coaching and dry land training for the team

• Lead and effectively manage the coaching team, leading coach’s meetings as required

• Produce a comprehensive annual training and competition plan designed to achieve the performance targets set for the team

• Plan and initiate movement of swimmers between squads within the team in cooperation with the coaching team

• Lead swimmers at agreed swimming competitions

• Assist in the delivery of nutritional advice, physiotherapy and other support services required by swimmers

• Work proactively in promoting swimming in East Lothian, with regular visits to feeder clubs. The head coach will play a key role in developing a smooth pathway for swimmers to join the team

• Lead and support the increased awareness of the team through development and implementation of media, online and promotional activity

• Provide periodic feedback on progress to the Management Committee, and prepare an annual performance report to be presented at the AGM

• Plan effective use of pool time liaising with the Pool Let Co-ordinator

Key skills and behaviours that are expected from the coaching contractor:

• Ability to motivate and encourage swimmers in all squads, as well as deliver a high-quality program to those aspiring to regionals, nationals and beyond

• Good organisational and communication skills to engage effectively with swimmers, committee, parents, feeder clubs and other key stakeholders

• Good administration skills and the ability to clearly present reports and proposals for the development of swimming

• Commitment to ensure the team meets its annual budget targets

• Willing to develop and improve as a coach

• Review and co-ordinate the work programmes of ELST coach(es), monitor and advise on swimmer and coach performance, mentor and support coach(es)

• Able to spot talent and nurture it

• Able to make sessions enjoyable and to build a team ethos • Efficient and effective time management

• Approachable and friendly

To effectively deliver the coaching service the coaching contractor will be:

• Qualified to Level 3 Swimming Coaching (or Level 2 coaching with ambition to undertake Level 3) • Experienced in coaching in a performance development environment

• Have a Scottish Swimming membership (or be willing to be a member) as well as have a PVG Scheme Membership and up to date Wellbeing and Protection training Application
