Swim Wales is seeking an experienced and highly motivated person to direct the performance swimming programme across Wales.

A successful programme will provide a continuous flow of swimmers into Commonwealth Games and British Swimming and Para Swimming teams and will require the National Performance Director to manage a team of coaches in both our High Performance Centres in Cardiff and Swansea and our network of 7 Performance Centres across Wales.

These 12 coaches are the spearhead of elite swimming in Wales and they will require help, support and motivation. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing and managing an integrated performance pathway  from club and regional performance centres to the two national high performance centres
  • Developing and managing a rigorous and systematic framework for selection, monitoring and profiling of swimmers
  • Working with coaches to develop and implement swimmer performance plans
  • managing camps and competition programmes, sometimes acting as Team Leader or Head Coach at meets
  • Working with Welsh Coaches and Sports Scientists to reinforce technical standards and identify innovations 
  • Manage the National programmes to include budgetary control
  • Collaborate with Home Country Swimming Association programmes to develop pathways into the British Swimming  performance pathway
  • Participate in evaluation reviews of national training centres, focussing on the Welsh National Senior , Youth, Regional and Age Talent level
  • Develop and manage Talent Support Grants policy and selection for Welsh talent ID athletes 


The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will already have experience of working in a high performance sports environment, managing elite athletes and coaches on a day-to-day basis. Knowledge of the British high performance system will be an advantage.

The National Performance Director will have a proven track record of identifying and exploiting opportunities to create a world class training and competitive environment for athletes, coaches and support staff. Possess an ability to mentor and motivate athletes and coaches and provide them with constant help, support and advice.

As a natural communicator, the person will develop effective working relationships with key partners to include Performance Centres across Wales, Sport Wales, key Unitary Authorities & Swimming Clubs, British Swimming and other organisations and individuals identified as key to supporting elite swimming.

 Working Arrangements

The National Performance Director will be expected to work extended hours during times of peak activity. A feature of many sports is that major events and opportunities for national training camps coincide with national holidays; Swimming is no exception.

Performance centres operate across Wales and the NPD must be able and prepared to travel extensively throughout country and possess a passport and UK driving licence.
