Swim West Lothian (SWL) is looking to contract an experienced, dynamic and passionate Performance Development Coach to drive forward our vision of inspiring young athletes to become champions in life through excellence in swimming. We take pride in encouraging swimmers to develop the skills and techniques needed to not only maximise their potential in the pool, but most importantly in all other areas of their lives. We create an environment that is conducive to producing dedicated and passionate young athletes, while continually stressing essential life skills through participation in sport

Formed in 2007, SWL is a performance development programme made up of 6 partner clubs (Aquanauts of Livingston ASC, Bathgate ASC, Broxburn & District ASC, Livingston & District Dolphins ASC, Fauldhouse Penguins ASC and Trojan ASC) and is supported by local and national partners; West Lothian Council, Xcite (West Lothian Leisure) and Scottish Swimming. SWL caters for approximately 80 athletes with our ambition to be recognised as one of the top performing performance development programmes in Scotland.

Key Tasks

  • Develop an effective performance development environment evaluated by appropriate levels of water/land space access, coaching, facility, equipment, programme engagement
  • Deliver direct coaching to SWL squads through a process based approach to swimmer development and progression, evaluated against clear, goal orientated individual plans, “mindset”, technical/physical development
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to all coaches - encouraging continuous development of all coaching staff. Convene and chair regular coaching review meetings
  • Liaise with the coaching team to ensure progression between squads is fair and transparent through regular monitoring of criteria and squad membership
  • Plan annual competition calendar, attending specified competitions and providing support to all SWL athletes
  • Develop positive working partnerships and ensure effective communication systems are implemented with swimmers and their parents, as well as other key stakeholders
  • Engage in Club communications, such as newsletter and website and be responsible for all swimming/swimmer related content on the website
  • Follow all policies and codes as required by SWL and Scottish Swimming
  • Attend meetings and produce reports as required by the SWL Management Committee
  • Engage in Scottish Swimming National Programmes 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven experience of working in a club or composite environment
  • Effective communicator with the ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with swimmers, club volunteers, parents and partners
  • Ability to work as part of a team and effectively on own
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to lead, influence, enthuse and motivate others.
  • Ability to work flexible and unsocial hours.
  • Be skills-focused with the ability to apply and share technical knowledge 

Applicants must hold (or be working towards) a UKCC Level 3 Coaching Swimming qualification (or equivalent). Excellent leadership and communication skills are a must as well as the ability to enthuse and motivate others.

The individual will deliver a contract for services (key functions outlined above) for which payment will be made, based on experience/qualification.
