SSTQ Stands for Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification.

The SSTQ is the industry standard for those who wish to teach unsupervised to groups of swimmers with a range of abilities and is essential for seeking employment as a swimming teacher.

This qualification is achieved from a practically-based course and will allow candidates to gain the necessary skills and experience prior to progressing to an aquatics working environment. It will support candidate’s ongoing learning and development ensuring that they are fully prepared to deliver high quality lessons.

The SSTQ conversion course is designed to advance learners to the qualification standard of the full SSTQ course by using their existing knowledge, experience and qualifications and adding to this to reach the required level of assessment for the SSTQ.

The SSTQ conversion course is suitable for candidates who have an existing UKCC Level 1 Teaching qualification or higher. Candidates will be issued with a Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification (SSTQ) upon completion of this course.

SSTQ

The SSTQ involves both practical and theory sessions with practical assessments undertaken during the course.

The duration of the course is 8 full days (but there are different delivery options to suit different course organisers/tutors), in addition there are deliberate learning “spaces” between sessions to allow for learning to be assimilated, reflected upon and practiced before the next contact session. Within each full day of contact there is a minimum of 50% practical teaching.

The SSTQ Conversion course is delivered over 3 days (with learning spaces) and involves both practical and theory sessions with a practical assessment undertaken during the course.

Assessment is of a practical nature combined with a number of on-course tasks.

Scottish Swimming recognises that there are many avenues which individuals may have developed their teaching skills. E.g. teachers may have gained teaching skills abroad.

Scottish Swimming values these skills and welcomes coaches from different backgrounds into our sport in Scotland.

In order to assist these teachers in integrating into swimming teaching in Scotland we offer a number of routes to recognise achievement, valuing it in comparison with the SSTQ qualification.

There is a set application process for which encompases Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Exemption and Overseas Qualification Comparison. Application forms and further information can be found under our Qualification Comparison section.

Scottish Swimming state that results will be issued up to 8 weeks after the course has finished and Scottish Swimming has received all relevant documentation.

Please note that results cannot be disclosed over the telephone and can only be issued to candidates by letter/email.
