CWPC 2014: England complete double with win over Malta

England 16  - Malta 9   (5-1, 5-2,4-3,2-3)

England made sure they returned south with both golds as they won their Gold Medal match against Malta in the final game of the tournament in Aberdeen.

After an ill-disciplined performance in their group match meeting, Malta were looking to concentrate on playing water polo rather than the referee.

But once again they were up against an England side full of confidence and scoring. Making it very difficult for the Maltese all afternoon who had to settle for the silver medal as they lost 16-9.

England got off to a great winning the first quarter 5-1 as Malta once again were more concerned with the referee and his decisions rather than defending.

O’regan opened the scoring bouncing home before goals from Tom Curwen, Glen Robinson and Jake Vincent established their lead.

England continued their dominance in the second quarter as Sean King added his name to the scoresheet before O’regan completed his hat-trick as England increased their lead to 10-3 at half-time.

Malta needed something special in the second half if they were to have any chance of winning the gold, they started the half well scoring through Jordan Camilleri.

But the English were just too good for them all over the pool, goals from Sean King, Curwen and Jonny Kirk quickly cancelled out Camilleri’s goal.  Camilleri added a second and Michele Stellini scored but England looked solid leading 14-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Tom Curwen was by far the best player in the pool, scoring five of England’s goals most of which were in the top corner.

With the game won, England were able to play some really nice polo in front of a packed Aberdeen crowd, going on to win the match 16-9 and the gold.

Final Score- England 16  -  Malta  9
