Malta beat Scotland to go top

Scotland started strongly Neilsen Rutherford opening the scoring in the 2nd minute after som good build up play.

The Scots weren’t in the lead for long as Jordan Camilleri opened his account with two quickfire goals before Nikki Lanzon scored twice to give the visitors a 4-1 lead.

James Scobie fresh from his seven goals last night against Wales scored just before the end of the first quarter to keep the hosts in touch.

Ali Campbell was impeded and then scored an early penalty in the second quarter to reduce the deficit to just one.

Malta’s prolific forward partnership of Nikki Lanzon and Jordan Camilleri completed their hat-tricks before the end of the half, giving their team a 7-4 lead.

Scotland’s chances took a blow early in the second half when talisman James Scobie was majored out and excluded from the rest of the match.  

From that moment on Scotland struggled to create much going forward and Malta took full advantage, strengthening their lead to six at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Nikki Lanzon who impressed against New Zealand put in a man of the match performance, scoring six of Malta’s 18 goals.

Final Score Scotland 7 - Malta 18 (2-4, 2-3, 2-5, 1-6)

The win sends Malta top of the league after two successive wins and they face Singapore in their next game. Scotland will face the South Africa next, both games will be played tomorrow.
