Scotland suffer narrow defeat to South Africa

Scotland 8 v South Africa 9 (2-3,1-1, 2-3,3-2)

With one win and one loss, Scotland's men's team faced a strong South African team in the last game of the day in front of packed crowd at the Aberdeen Sports Village.

South Africa got off to a devastatingly good start as they raced into a two goal lead after just two minutes, long range efforts from Nick Hock and Chris Baker finding the net to silence the crowd.

The Scottish crowd were soon cheering though as Keith Anderson linked up with James Scobie to pull one back.

Lood Rabie then restored South Africa’s lead to two but a goal from Ed Grundy just before the end of the quarter meant them game was evenly poised at 3-2.

Scotland completed the comeback thanks to a solo effort from Andrew Woodall cutting from the left hand side unchallenged.

Late in the half, South Africa forward Nic Mollyneux capitalised on a man-up to give his side the lead at the half time break. 4-3

Chris Baker found space in the first minute of the half to  double his side’s lead but an Ali Campbell penalty kept the Scots in touch.

Scotland pressed, keeping the South Africans in their own half for majority of the third quarter, but a quick counter attack by Nick Hock and Richard Downes gave the latter the opportunity to take a 6-4 lead.

Once again the Scots reduced the deficit to one through Mark Speed but Lood Rabie replied to give his side a 7-5 lead at the break.

Scotland needed a big eight minutes in the fourth quarter to turn this around and with the crowd in full voice it was going to be close.

But the atmosphere soon changed as two quick goals from Nic Mollyneux and Richard Downes meant it was a real uphill battle for Scotland as they trailed by four with seven minutes to go.

It changed again as Keith Anderson pulled one back for the hosts before an unbelievable backhand goal from Fraser Rutherford meant South Africa’s lead was back to just two.

With a minute left Scotland, Neilsen Rutherford reduced the deficit to just one but it was too little too late for the Scots as they lost 9-8.

Final Score: Scotland  8  -  South Africa  9
