More British and Scottish Records Fall on Day 2 of #SNAGS14

"Not only do we have the best coaches, I have made the best of friends there too.” Niamh Ritchie, Warrender Baths Club

Youngster Katie Robertson enjoyed a record breaking time on the second day of the Scottish Gas National Age Groups Championships being held at the new Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen.

The 12-year old swimmer from South Ayrshire broke the Scottish National Age Group Record (12years) twice in the 100m breaststroke. Shaving a little over 0.3 off her own record during the afternoon heats (1:15.28), Robertson dominated her final, taking a further 1.1 seconds off the new National standard in her age group to touch home in 1:14.11.

Earlier in the day Sophie Smith (St. Thomas) also broke her own Scottish National Age Group Record (12 years) in the 800m freestyle, lowering the standard to 9:26.12.

Carnegie’s Craig McLean continued to enjoy a fantastic meet.  Fresh from his Scottish Junior Record in last night’s 100m backstroke, McLean broke the British Age Group Record (15 years) in the 200m freestyle, posting an impressive time of 1:51.34. He later went onto take gold in the 400m IM final for his age group, swimming a well-judged race where he was pushed hard by Oliver Kincart (Portsmouth Northsea). McLean touched home in 4:40.68, with Kincart winning silver in 4:44.12, just ahead of Samuel Jones of West Lothian who won bronze in 4:45.23.

Warrender girls dominated the 200m backstroke event with a hat-trick of golds being won in the first three age group races. Roisin Ramsay, Niamh Ritchie and Charlie Cavens all looked strong in their respective finals and helped the Edinburgh club increase their medal tally by 10 after tonight’s finals.

Speaking after picking up their medals, Ramsay and Ritchie were happy with their races, with Ritchie saying,

“Warrender is a great club to be part of. Not only do we have the best coaches, I have made the best of friends there too.”
