Mixed fortunes for Caledonia and Portobello in British National Water Polo League

The teams from Caledonia and Portobello had mixed fortunes during round 2 of the British National Water Polo League at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh last weekend.

Of the regular Super Fives qualifiers, Portobello have work to do if they are to go through once again. After losing to Lancaster on day one in their home pool, City of Sheffield inflicted more damage, winning for the first time this season 13-12 after leading 8-4 at the halfway stage. A late Chris Howard goal secured both points for Sheffield after Portobello levelled at 12-12.

Portobello's situation eased when they beat Manchester 7-5 in their third match of the weekend, but they still need points from testing matches at Cardiff against Cheltenham and Bristol Central to be secure, which means there will be much to play for when the men's Division One campaign is completed at Cardiff International Sports Centre on 1/2 November. Team Northumbria continued to make impressive progress in men's Division Two defeating Caledonia 12-10 and Manchester Hawks 10-6.

Against Caledonia, Northumbria raced into an 11-4 lead in the third quarter before the Scots staged a belated rally. Zachari White (5) and Steve Green (4) were the chief Northumbria marksmen. Caledonia enjoyed a better day on Sunday with a brace of victories, the first coming against City of Birmingham where they won 9-6. This was followed up by a convincing win over Manchester Hawks with Caledonia coming out winners 13-8.

These results leave Caledonia second in the Division 2 table.
