Dunfermline Men retain Scottish Cup

"The players coped remarkably well in a close match against very physical opponents. " Paul Metcalfe, Coach, Dunfermline Waterpolo Club

Dunfermline Waterpolo Club retained the Scottish Cup for the first time since 1988 after a 14 – 10 victory over Portobello at Stirling on Sun 11 January. This rounds off a great season for the senior men's team after they finished their 2014 Scottish League campaign undefeated.

The match was a close affair with no team holding more than a 2 goal lead in the 1st half. Despite Portobello opening the scoring, Dunfermline replied with 3 goals on the bounce from Darren Campbell and a double from Ali Campbell. Portobello then converted an outside shot to finish the period trailing 3-2.

The 2nd period saw both teams trade 2 goals each to keep Dunfermline’s 1 goal advantage in tack at half time. Chris and Darren Campbell were both on the score sheet for Dunfermline. The 3rd period saw Portobello gain the lead in the match for the last time with 2 quick goals within the opening 2 minutes. Dunfermline fought back again with 3 straight goals from Andrew Woodall, Mark Speed and Chris Campbell before Portobello scored 1 more to put Dunfermline into an 8-7 lead going into the final period.

Dunfermline made an excellent start to the 4th period, moving into a 3 goal lead thanks to goals from Chris Campbell and Ali Campbell. Both teams then evenly traded 6 goals, with Mark Speed, Chris Campbell and Darren Campbell netting for Dunfermline before Portobello were awarded a penalty with less than 2 minutes remaining in the match. This gave them the opportunity to reduce the deficit to 2 goals with enough time remaining to still tie the match however Dunfermline goal keeper Simon Metcalfe rounded off a fine performance with a big save to ensure the margin remained at 3. The game was then all but over 18 seconds later when Dunfermline were awarded a penalty of their own, which Ali Campbell converted to ensure Dunfermline were crowned as 2014 Scottish Cup winners.

Coach Paul Metcalfe had the following to say after the match: "I'm delighted to have retained the cup. The players coped remarkably well in a close match against very physical opponents. The win sets us up nicely for the year ahead."
