Carlin and Milne Show Pace in Edinburgh

"As first races go, I’m pretty happy with that." Stephen Milne on his victory in the 1500m freestyle

Jazz Carlin and Stephen Milne secured impressive wins on the opening night of the Edinburgh International Swim Meet 2015 at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

Carlin (University of Bath), fresh from training in Marseille, dominated the 400m freestyle event, taking the lead from off the blocks and powering her way over the distance. The double European Champion took victory in 4:06.79, well ahead of nearest rivals Hannah Miley (Garioch) and Ellie Faulkner (City of Sheffield) who finished a hotly contested battle in 2nd and 3rd places respectively (4:13.13 and 4:13:32).

Stephen Milne also took his 1500m race on from the start. Milne who broke Graeme Smith’s long standing Scottish Record in the event last year, showed his strength throughout the race but didn’t have it all his own way, with his friend Dan Jervis (City of Swansea) closing the gap with each turn. Milne (Perth City), however, held on to take the win in 15:18.91, while Jervis finished 2nd in 15:24.15 and Loughborough’s Toby Robinson was 3rd in 15:38.56.

After the race Milne said, “I’m working on the processes involved in a race. It will be good to recap on the race itself, refine techniques and practice tactics ahead of the Trials next month. But as first races go, I’m pretty happy with that.”

There were two 50m ‘skins’ events with the men’s 50m fly and women’s 50m breaststroke events. Starting with 8 swimmers, 2 are knocked out with every round, leaving two athletes to battle it out in the final.

For the men, Tom Shields (University of California) took the glory in 24.50, just ahead of Adam Barrett of Loughborough, while University of Edinburgh’s Corrie Scott won the breaststroke event in 32.51, edging out Molly Renshaw (Loughborough).

The Edinburgh International Swim Meet is taking place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh from 13-15 March 2015.
