Thursday, August 20, 2015 Open Water Swimming at Loch Lomond Scottish national one-mile open water event to become part of elite programme at Great Scottish Swim If you enjoyed the excitement of the Scottish National Open Water Swimming Championships last weekend at Loch Venachar and you’re looking for something to do over the next few weekends, head down to Loch Lomond to watch some more open water racing. The Scottish Swimming’s next ‘come and try’ event at Milarrochy Bay in Balmaha will be held on Sunday 23rd August. The stunning location is one of the most popular places for open water swimming in Scotland. With Ben Lomond as one of the landmarks swimmers use to guide, or “sight” them around the course, it is easy to see why. The sold out event follows on from successful sessions in Falkirk, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, and is also a great opportunity to find out more about opening water swimming. The following weekend (Saturday 29th Aug) sees one of the biggest events of the year in the sport, The Great Scottish Swim. It takes place close to the picturesque setting of Luss and attracts hundreds of people every year. It’s part of an elite competition with some of the World’s best open water swimmers competing against Scotland’s home grown talent, in the iconic setting of one of Scotland’s most loved lochs. Competing in the open water for the first time at this year’s event is Olympic gold medallist and local Balloch boy, Ross Murdoch and joining him will be fellow Scot and Commonwealth silver medallist, Robbie Renwick. Come along and help cheer on the competitors. Come along and support all the swimmers! If you can’t make either of those events there’s another chance to watch opening water swimming at the Discovery Mile Championship in Dundee on the 29th of August. Watch the swimmers take to the River Tay to test their endurance during the one mile swim.
