Olympia Plays Host to Water Polo Season Finale

"There is a lot of rivalry between the clubs so we know that all matches will be hard fought and closely contested.” Alan Anderson, Chair of Scottish Water Polo Committee

The stage is set for what is billed to be a nail-biting finale to the Scottish Water Polo season as Olympia in Dundee plays host to ten teams from four clubs battling it out to take top honours. A finals day for all Scottish Cup competitions was introduced into the water polo calendar last year and will return to Dundee following last year’s success.

The first of the five trophies to be decided is the Dave Balbirnie Cup for an U16 mixed team. Dunfermline WPC will go up against defending champions Warrender WPC at 10.30am.

A new trophy for this year, the Annette Mooney Memorial Trophy, for Girls U19 starts around 11.55 am, and following last night’s semi-final the line-up is confirmed with Dunfermline and Warrender going head-to-head once again.

Defending Champions Dunfermline take on Menzieshill and Whitehall SWPC in the Men’s U21 Malta Trophy at 1.20 pm followed by the Graz Trophy (Women) which will see Menzieshill and Whitehall take on Dunfermline once again, with Dunfermline having knocked out defending champions Edinburgh University Students WPC.

The final match of the day sees defending champions Portobello take on Dunfermline in the Men’s Scottish Cup. These two clubs are at the top of their game in Scotland and is fitting that this game is the climax of the day.

Alan Anderson, Chair of the Scottish Water Polo Committee, said,

“Water Polo at this level is played at a ferocious pace and with enormous passion and we hope that as many people as possible will come along and support the teams playing on Sunday. There is a lot of rivalry between the clubs so we know that all matches will be hard fought and closely contested.”

All five trophies will be decided over the course of the day. Doors open at 10am (Sunday 26 June) and tickets are available at the entrance and are priced at £2 for adults and £1 for children.
