Volunteer Week 2016 – Saying thank you to Judy Wardlaw

"Volunteering is a great way to give back to your club, to meet new people and to help develop the sport." Judy Wardlaw

The annual campaign, established in 1984, recognises the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our sport so we would like to use the next 12 days as an opportunity to say ‘thank you’.

While we will focus on some individuals about why they volunteer, our thanks are not just limited to them. We say thank you to everyone who gives of their time so freely to support the aquatics community across Scotland.

On the day the British Diving Championships start it is apt we meet a volunteer from the diving community. Judy Wardlaw provides us with some background into why and how she became a volunteer.

What club are you involved with?

Edinburgh Diving Club

How did you get involved in volunteering?

I dived for EDC for 9 years and have coached at competitions as a volunteer for a further 12 years. I am now in my second year of acting secretary so I have progressively become more involved in the running of the club as time has passed. I love the sport of diving and the club and wanted to help positively develop both in any way I could.

What do you get out of being a volunteering?

I am privileged to see the divers of the club travel away to competitions and (hopefully) see their hard work and training pay off. I also get the opportunity to watch the divers develop and grow in confidence and make new friendships - something that was very important to me as a diver.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering?

Definitely get involved; it's a great way to give back to your club, to meet new people and to help develop the sport. Clubs cannot be successful without a strong group of volunteers backing them.

What is your volunteering highlight?

I have been asked to attend Barcelona International Cup this year as a coach - so I'm hoping that will be a highlight of my volunteering career so far!

Diving is a discipline that has seen huge growth and we must thank the clubs and volunteers like Judy for all their hard work in creating new opportunities for youngsters to get involved.
