Wednesday, March 29, 2017 First medals secured at Age Group Championships Lexie Waller collecting her medal after the 200m backstroke final, where she posted a consideration time for the Commonwealth Youth Games The Scottish National Age Group Championships kicked off today at the Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen, where almost 1000 athletes representing 86 clubs descended for the first National Championships of the long course season. Lexie Waller, Heart of Midlothian, could not hide her smile following her 200m backstroke win in the 16 years age group category. Not only did she secure gold, her time of 2:15.63 was inside the consideration time for a place on Youth Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games, which take place in the Bahamas in July. Waller said after the race, “I’m so excited, I’ve been thinking about the Youth Games since the start of the season, but to post a consideration time, I feel I’ve made a big step in the right direction. “Obviously there are other girls in contention and the British Champs in a couple of weeks will be important. It will be a very close field and I am looking to go faster.” George Clough (Warrender Baths) came agonisingly close to secure a consideration time for the 200m breaststroke for the Commonwealth Youth Games. He dominated his 17/18 years final to touch home in 2:19.43, just 0.26 off the nomination time. Clough has a busy meet with more events to come and will also have his eye on going faster at the British Championships in Sheffield in three weeks time. Katie Shanahan (City of Glasgow Swim Team) was on great form early on this evening, breaking the 12 years age group record in the 200m backstroke, with a time of 2:22.17. Douglas Kelly (Milngavie & Bearsden) broke the boys 13 years age group record in the 50m butterfly posting at time of 27.64. Scottish Age Group Records were also broken earlier in the day by Gulsum Onal (Swim West Lothian) in the 100m freestyle (18 years) with a time of 56.57, while the Warrender Baths Club quartet of Jamie MacDonald, Joe Ewing, Sonny Kennedy and Archie Goodburn set a new Scottish Junior Club Record in the 4x200m freestyle, posting a time of 8:08.10.
