Destination Aberdeen – Scottish National Open Swimming Championships 2017

All roads lead to Aberdeen this week as over 630 athletes representing 73 Clubs from across the UK descend on the Aquatics Centre at Aberdeen Sports Village for the start of the Scottish National & Open Swimming Championships.

The four day event forms part of the Team Scotland Series and is a nominated event for posting a consideration time for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Game. The Championships will see some of the leading Scottish athletes fine tune their race plans ahead of a busy summer at both International and National level.

Hannah Miley, Ross Murdoch, Mark Szaranek, Duncan Scott, Kathleen Dawson and Stephen Milne are all in action before their final camp ahead of the FINA World Championships in Budapest next month, with Scott saying in a recent interview with the Sunday Herald,

“I’ve always really enjoyed – and hope to keep enjoying – swimming at the Scottish nationals. It’s a good meet and its fun. I’ll be going there looking to race fast as it’s the last competition I’ll be doing before worlds. So I don’t want to go there to put in a poor performance.”

Camilla Hattersley who will head to the World University Games in Chinese Taipei in August also said during an interview with the BBC,

“This is the biggest event that we have in Scotland and all of Scotland's best swimmers will be there. There are a lot of young swimmers coming through who are so quick and there's real competition for places in teams.

"The Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast are definitely within my reach and although this isn't the only chance of posting a consideration time, I’m hoping I can set a time now and it will take some of the pressure off.”

Scottish Swimming, in partnership with Glasgow-based QTV Sports, will once again be providing a free-to-air live stream from the Championships, broadcasting the evening sessions (finals) online from Wednesday 1st April. The stream can be found at

Forbes Dunlop, Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Swimming said,

“We are delighted to return to the Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen. To have over 70 Clubs from across the UK travel to attend shows how highly this event is thought of in the swimming community.

“Our Clubs and volunteers remain at the heart of our membership and we thank all those attending for their continued support. Over the course of the four days we will be holding another Club Clinic session where we look forward to hearing the ideas, requests and challenges our members face as they help drive their clubs and the sport forward.

“On behalf of Scottish Swimming I welcome everyone to the event and wish all athletes competing the very best.”
