Renfrew Baths swimmer completes Swim22 Challenge

Congratulations to young Stella McConnell from Renfrew Baths ASC, who recently lent her support to Diabetes UK by raising money during a sponsored swim.

10-year old Stella decided to complete the Swim22 challenge, swimming 22 miles, the equivalent of the English Channel, between 22nd February and 22nd May in order to raise much needed funds for the charity, which is close to Stella’s heart, as her Gran has type 2 diabetes.

Each week thousands of people in the UK suffer heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, amputation and blindness because of their diabetes. Diabetes UK provide information, care and support for everyone with diabetes – and for their family and friends – so they can manage their condition well. Our campaigns improve life for people with diabetes while our research develops new treatments, technologies and will, one day, find a cure.

Stella joined Renfrew Baths ASC at 8 years old, when she finished lessons through Renfrewshire learn to swim scheme and has been there two years. Based at the historic Renfrew Victory Baths, the club has a well-run committee and a dedicated coaching team headed up by Rob. Rob along with coaches John, Gillian and Kat have supported Stella in achieving her goal of swimming the 22 miles.

Now hooked on swimming, Stella has progressed to the Bronze squad who practice twice a week. She said,

“I love swimming with Renfrew. I’ve made loads of friends and they’ve all supported me in doing my swim for my Gran and raising money for Diabetes UK.”
