Thomson and Heatly Claim Platform Gold on Opening Night of Championships

The Scottish National & Open Diving Championships began today at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh with the 3m and 10m synchro events.

Edinburgh Diving Club’s Lucas Thomson and James Heatly, fresh from a training camp in Australia, which included the pair winning silver at the FINA World Diving Grand Prix on the Gold Coast, secured victory in the Men’s Platform Synchro with a score of 360.48. Silver went to Aidan Heslop and Alfie Brown of Plymouth Diving, with Angus Menmuir and Danny Mabbot winning bronze.

The pair produced a solid set of dives with their Reverse 2½ Somersaults with Tuck and Back 2½ Somersaults 1½ Twists Piked scoring highly (72.24 and 71.04 respectively).

After the event Thomson said, “We’re definitely showing some real potential now. Four out of the six dives were really good, while there is still a bit of work to be done on the other two to sharpen things up. But overall I’m happy with that.”

Heatly added, “We’ve got to be happy with that. This is only our third competition diving together and it is still very early on in the season. The fact that nothing went drastically wrong is good and as Lucas said it’s just about sharpening things up now.  We’ve the British Championships at the end of January where there will be more competition and a great opportunity to improve again.”

Thomson and Heatly will contest the 1m, 3m and individual platform events over the course of the weekend.

In other events Edinburgh Diving Clubs Caitlyn Lumsden and Mhairi Goodwin were crowned Scottish National Champions in both the 3m and 10m synchro events, while Angus Menmuir and Danny Mabbot won the Men’s 3m synchro title.

The Scottish National & Open Diving Championships are taking place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool from 30th November to 3rd December 2017.
