#SNAGS2018: Day 1 Report

Katie Shanahan bagged two gold medals on Day 1 of the 2018 Scottish National Age Group Championships and broke a national record of her own in the process.

The City of Glasgow swimmer stole the show at the start of opening night in the backstroke event, when she swam the fastest time of anyone at the Championships in the 200m 14 Age Group final. She touched home in 2:18.02 to break her own national age group record and get her meet off to the perfect start in what is a busy schedule for the 14-year-old.

She followed that performance up by posting a sub-1 minute time of 59.58 in the 100m freestyle to claim her second gold medal of the night.

Shanahan was delighted with her record-breaking performance and said: “I did think I had a chance at the record as I'd already done it so I was just hoping to go out and break it again, and to do so at this meet just makes me so happy.

"Training's been hard in the lead up to the meet but it's paid off and I'm glad." The young Glaswegian added that she wants to build on her success over the rest of the Championshsips. She said: "I've got like three swims a session so I'll hope for more PBs and maybe another Scottish record."

15-year-old Mark Ford (City of Glasgow) was one of the stand-out performers on the male side. Ford won gold in the Mens 15 Age Group 100m Backstroke after swimming the second-fastest time of all in the heats, and then won out in a fantastic duel against Marcus Scullion (Winchester), taking the victory by two-hundredths of a second.

Archie Goodburn, the Warrender starlet recently selected to the European Juniors squad for the championships in Helsinki this summer, also bagged a double on opening night. The 17-year-old claimed victory in the 200m Breaststroke final and the 50m Butterfly, in which he missed out on the age group record by only four-hundredths of a second. And the success didn't stop there for the Goodburn family as sister Katie grabbed gold in the 15 Age Group final of the 100m Breaststroke.

Elsewhere, Katie Robertson (South Ayrshire Swim Team) came out on top in what was arguably the race of the night in the 17-18 Age Group Final for the 50m Breaststroke, and 14-year-old Cameron Travis (Aberdeen Performance) picked up a brace of medals.

The morning session ended with a thrilling victory for Warrender BC ‘A’ in the Boys 14-16 Age Group 4x200m Freestyle Relay. Just before that the first medals were handed out to Iona MacLeod (Dundee City Aquatics), Jennifer Murray (North Ayrshire ASC) and Emma Russel (Heart of Midlothian ASC), who finished 1-2-3 in the Women’s 15/over 1500m Freestyle.

The afternoon session climaxed with a similarly entertaining relay; StirlingSwimming edged out South Lanarkshire and Warrender BC to take gold in the 11-13 Boys 4x100m Freestyle with only 1.6 seconds splitting the top three. Kailyn Hall of Aberdeen Performance taking the gold medal in the Age 14 1500m final in a time of 18:27.28, while Leigha Hughes swam to victory in the Age 11-13 final over the same distance in a time of 18:52.31.

In terms of the overall top team prize, City of Glasgow had the most first-place finishes at the end of Day 1.
