#SNAGS2018: Day 3 Report

Scott Gibson (South Lanarkshire) made it two out of two in the backstroke at #SNAGS2018 and with just one more to go he could come away from the Championships with a clean sweep.

The 17-18 200m Backstroke Final was the scene for Gibson's second gold of the meet, taking the win ahead of Keir Edgar (FIRST) and Joe Watt (City of Glasgow), shaving five seconds off his entry time in the process.

The South Lanarkshire swimmer, who needs the 50m title on Sunday to take the hat-trick, said after tonight's final: "It feels really good, that's the first time I've managed to swim that race really well. I've struggled with it in the past and it's a PB so I'm happy with that."

Elsewhere, Rory Dickson of North Ayrshire ASC picked up a gold and silver in what is turning into a successful championships for him, while Sophie Smith picked up two wins on her first night of racing, winning the 17-18 Age Group 50m and 400m Freestyle titles. The St Thomas swimmer said after her second victory of the night: "It feels amazing. This is my first day here so I'm just really happy with how it went."

The 17-year-old said her form going into the meet was less than ideal, and had to bounce back from disappointment. She added: "I had the British a couple of weeks back and it didn't go how I hoped so just to be back and swimming good times makes me happy."

In between Smith's victories we witnessed an outstanding Girls 16 Age Group 50m Freestyle Final, with only 1.5s separating first and last. Georgina Dennis (Mount Kelly), was first to touch home in 27.31s.

Another swimmer who keeps adding to her medal tally is Iona MacLeod of Dundee City Aquatics. MacLeod powered away from the competition in the 400m Freestyle Final, finishing in 4:23.72 to leave her with time to turn and watch the tight fight for second and third, with Emma Russell (Heart of Midlothian), Kirstie Flynn (Leatherhead-SE) and Ellie Turner (Carnegie SC) split by exactly 0.3s.

In the 11-13 Age Group, Ceri Gillespie (Garioch) brought the afternoon session to a close with a brilliant swim in the 400m Freestyle. 12-year-old Stefan Krawiec (East Lothian), the younges gold medalist at SNAGS so far, was once againon the top step, on this occasion for the 100m Breaststroke. Kyle Pate picked up his second win in the 19/over Age Group.

In the opening race of the evening session the crowd watched a classy swim from Joseph Vickers (Boston) who streaked away from the field to win the 11-13 Age Group 200m Backstroke final. There was a terrific scrap for the remaining places, with Travis Davey of Dundee City Aquatics finishing behind Vickers to take the Scottish title and a fantastic final split from 12-year-old Lucas Brown (Elgin) in the outside lane saw him claim silver.

Warrender's Archie Goodburn continues to only know the feeling of winning as he romped to victory in the 17-18 Age Group 50m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke, the latter in a time of 1:03.02. His sister Katie also took home a gold medal in the same category in the Girls 15 Age Group Final.
