Friday, July 12, 2019 Heatly into World Championships Final A focused James Heatly progresses to World Championships final James Heatly was the first UK athlete in action at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, which started today with the 1m springboard prelim. If the Edinburgh athlete was nervous he didn’t show it with a strong first round dive, a forward 2½ somersaults 1 twist, pike, which scored 67.20 points. He dropped a couple of dives in rounds two and three but finished his programme strongly with an inward 2½ somersaults pike and an overall score of 355.35 to secure a place in the final. Afterwards he said, “I’m pretty happy with that. I’ve got a day off tomorrow and for the final I’ll look to sharpen a few things up. I’ve already had a text from Jen (coach Jen Leeming). She’s gutted she can’t be here but is keeping in touch). “The pool is amazing and I love the big atmosphere events with the lights and all the cameras.” Heatly’s Edinburgh-based training partner, Yona Knight-Wisdom who represents Jamaica also progressed to the final, while GBR team-mate, Ross Haslam, finished in 23rd.
