Reid and Daley edged out of medals in 3m synchro final

Grace Reid and Tom Daley were edged out of the medals by the narrowest of margins in the 3m mixed synchro event on the final day of the diving competition at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju.

After a modest start and the pair came back strong and after three rounds were lying in the bronze medal position. However, their fourth round dive, a Back 2 ½ Somersault, Pike wasn’t executed as well as it could have been and they dropped down to fifth place.

The pair who both train with DiveLondon, came back strong in their final dive, a Forward 3 ½ Somersault, Pike which produced their highest score of 73.47 and saw them climb back up the leader board to third. However, with a number of pairings still to dive the pair ended up fourth overall with a points total of 298.47, just  6.40 off the score that won the gold medal. That went to Australians Maddison Keeney and Matthew Carter (304.86).

The silver medal went to Jennifer Abel and Fancois Imbeau-Dulac of Canada (304.08) with Tina Punzel and Lou Massenberg of Germany taking bronze with  301.62 points.

Tom Daley said of their performance,

“That event is always so close because everybody is doing very similar degree of difficulty dives. I messed up my 4th round dive a little bit so if I had got anywhere near normal then we would have been up in the medals, maybe even a contender for gold; but at the end of the day I’m pretty happy with that and it’s a bit of a warm up event for me ahead of the 10m final.”

Grace Reid added,

“There’s definitely a degree of fun around the event and Tom helps me relax pretty well so yes I actually enjoyed that and probably had the most fun out of the week, today.”

Speaking about her performances over the course of the week, Reid added,

“My week overall has had highs and lows, lows perhaps not the right word. It’s been successful in that I got the jumps in that I needed to, and have plenty to work on to away from here.”

Tom Daley and Noah Williams will be back in action later today in the 10m platform final.
