Monday, September 9, 2019 Shaw & Clegg into World Para Swimming finals Stephen Clegg and Toni Shaw after their morning heats Toni Shaw and Stephen Clegg were both in action on the opening morning of the London 2019 World Para Swimming Allianz Championships, taking place at the London Aquatics Centre from 9 to 15 September. University of Aberdeen’s Toni Shaw looked strong in the opening heat of the Women’s S9 100m freestyle powering her way to a win and in doing so setting a new S9 Scottish Record for the event of 1:03.24. While the 16 years old from Aberdeen was delighted by her performance she knew things will be tougher this evening. She said, “I’m really happy with a little PB but I know that most of the girls in those heats will be holding something back for the final. It’s not my main event but it was my first one so I just wanted to go in there and go as fast as I could and hopefully I’ll go quicker tonight.” Stephen Clegg hit the lane rope during his S12 100m backstroke but still secured his place in the final with a heat time of 1:02.43. He said of his performance, “The race had its ups and downs. The biggest mistake was that I crashed into the lane rope in the last 25. That was a bit frustrating but considering that, the time was pretty good and I was pretty pleased with that. “I’ll have a look at the swim; see if the split and the rate were where they should be and then come back and hopefully no mistakes in the final.” Live results and the event schedule can be found here and you can catch all the action on Channel 4 here.
