Scottish success at BUCS Long Course Swimming Championships

It was a successful weekend of swimming in Sheffield as Scottish universities dominated the podium at the 2020 BUCS Long Course Swimming Championships.

Success was shared across the board with seven Scottish Universities included in the top 20 out of 48 competing. Stirling, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Heriot Watt and UWS all making numerous finals and enjoying medal success.

University of Stirling made history as the first university outside Loughborough to take home the overall men’s title in 32 years. Stirling topped the men’s table with 176 points, Loughborough and Edinburgh University just behind with 168 and 111 respectively. It was the same trio of clubs who topped the overall table too, with Loughborough claiming top prize ahead of Stirling in silver and Edinburgh in bronze.

The positive performances at Ponds Forge ISC will bode well for swimmers in carrying momentum towards Olympic trials in April. University of Stirling swimmer Cassie Wild was named Top Female Performer, with her performance in the 100m backstroke breaking the championship record in a time of 1:00.08.

The University of Stirling relay team continued their record breaking form in the 4x100m freestyle relay with Duncan Scott, Scott McLay, Callum Bain and Lorenz Weiermans claiming gold in a time of 3:20.58. The boys also came out on top in the 4x100 medley relay in a time of 3:40.14.

The University of Edinburgh also ensured relay gold was coming back to Scotland with a fantastic performance in the womens 4x100m medley relay. A team of Kat Greenslade, Kara Hanlon, Tain Bruce and Lucy Hope touched home in a time of 4:06.18 to take gold.
