Edinburgh International Swim Meet round-up

The Royal Commonwealth Pool hosted the Edinburgh International Swim Meet over the weekend, with a number of new national and age group records set. As ever the meet attracted some of the best athletes from the sport and Adam Peaty grabbed many of the headlines with the world’s fastest 100m breaststroke time of the year, so far.

Peaty’s 58.13 in the 100m breaststroke is a 2020 world marker in the event and the Loughborough National Centre based swimmer scooped a second gold with victory in the 50m distance too.

James Wilby and Ross Murdoch were also in the mix for breaststroke medals with the University of Stirling’s Murdoch winning silver, ahead of James Wilby in the 50m final, whilst the pair swapped podium positions in the 100m event. Wilby secured gold in the 200m final ahead of Murdoch.

There were more medals for University of Stirling across the board as Craig McNally won bronze in the 100m backstroke. Martyn Walton also left with bronze in the 50m backstroke, where he was just behind Edinburgh University’s Scott Gibson who claimed silver.

Kathleen Dawson's return to form continues well, as she scooped a hat-trick of gold medals in the backstroke events, with team-mate Cassie Wild taking silver in the 50m and 100m finals.

Duncan Scott also left with three golds after strong performances in the 50m free, 100m free and 200m IM. Duncan’s 50m freestyle victory came in 22.21, a new Scottish record. His gold in the 200m IM was just ahead of team-mate Mark Szaranek with a time of 1:59.88 and 2:01.05 respectively.

Edinburgh University’s Jack Thorpe was the silver medallist in the 100m free, ahead of team-mate, David Cumberlidge. Edinburgh University enjoyed a number of other medal successes across the weekend with Lucy Hope winning silver in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events. Monique Olivier won gold in 400m freestyle and Kara Hanlon was a bronze medallist in the 200m breaststroke.

City of Glasgow Swim Team’s Katie Shanahan, continued her excellent form from last year, with a number of impressive performances including silver in both the 200m IM and 400m IM and bronze in the 200m backstroke.

Heart of Midlothian’s Emma Russell also received high praise after just missing out on a medal in the 100m freestyle. The 16 year-old clocked 55.83 in Sunday’s final behind Freya Anderson, Lucy Hope and Georgia Coates.

You can find full results from all three days here.

We would like to thank all of the swimmers, coaches and volunteers in attendance over the weekend.
