New National Club Poolside Helper & Educator Courses Announced

With many leisure trusts and pool operators working towards a reopening date of 26th April, Scottish Swimming is running a new National Club Poolside Helper course, which we hope will help clubs with member retention and reduce the workload normally associated with this course.

The course is part of our Young Volunteer Programme and has been designed to support young members within the club to reach their full potential by providing you with the following knowledge and skills to assist at club training sessions:

From attending the Poolside Helper Course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate to the coach you are able to assist and you know how to appropriately use equipment required. This is inclusive of the set up, safe use and put away and storage arrangements, and includes both personal and general equipment
  • Demonstrate to the coach you have a knowledge and understanding of the importance of Health & Safety in the aquatic environment. This includes risk identification and management, and awareness of risk at the pool(s) you will be helping at
  • Demonstrate to the coach you are able to share your knowledge, demonstrate good behaviour and establish expectations of the group.   This should include understanding your role as a helper, how to effectively communicate with participants and have a basic understanding of rules, skills and techniques of swimming

In order to sign-up for the Poolside Helper course, your club must have a qualified educator that is willing to sign off the practical element of the course; you can confirm this with your club committee/educators. A list of clubs with educators can be found HERE.

If your club doesn't currently have a trained educator, don't worry, we are also running another online Poolside Educator Course, so why not encourage a lead coach in your club to sign up to the training. The next scheduled Poolside Educator Course will be delivered on Tuesday 6th April (18:30 - 21:00) and can be booked HERE.

The pre-requisites for the Poolside Educator Course are as follows:

  • Hold a Level 2 Coaching Swimming qualification (or above) or approved equivalent. if you do not have this qualification you can contact your RSDM for an endorsement
