Seven Scots on British European Junior Championships team ready for Rome

Seven Scots have been named amongst a 24- strong squad, selected to represent a British team that will head to the Stadio del Nuoto for the European Junior Swimming Championships, which take place from 6th-11th July.

Among those looking to put in season best swims, compete for medals and gain valuable race and arena experience as they build for the future are four athletes who were part of the senior setup in Budapest in May; Tamryn Van Selm (Millfield School) and Evelyn Davis (Bromley), who both secured gold medals as part of relay successes last month, while Katie Shanahan (City of Glasgow) reached the Women's 200m Backstroke final, where she smashed her personal best.

Northampton's Ed Mildred is also doubling up on European appearances for the year following some promising performances in Budapest.

Rachel Saunders (Warrender Baths Club), Evan Jones (Millfield School), Lucy Grieve (South Ayrshire Swim Team) and Mark Ford (City of Glasgow) have also been selected off the back of their performances in Glasgow last week.

The full team has been named following the close of the selection window and the final domestic racing opportunity at the British Swimming Glasgow Meet, which provided the biggest return to racing opportunity yet for juniors since the first UK lockdown.

Ahead of the Championships, Team Leader Alan Lynn said:

"Having seven Scottish swimmers on the team is a fantastic achievement by all concerned. Being able to compete internationally is a privilege we don't take lightly and I'd like to thank all stakeholders for playing their part.

"Racing in Rome will present stern challenges in terms of travel, climate, outdoor competition, and the quality of opposition. We will do all we can to support the swimmers in learning about these and other performance problems to be solved.

"The next Olympic Games will be in 3 years and Paris awaits those who can successfully transition from junior to senior levels of performance. Rome 2021 is part of that learning journey and we look forward to seeing our young swimmers race in the gladiatorial arena of Stadia del Nuoto."
