Friday, July 30, 2021 Heartbreak for Reid in springboard prelims Grace Reid: a 19th place finish in 3m springboard prelims A 19th place finish in the prelims saw Grace Reid fall short of the semi-finals, as the individual diving events of the Tokyo Olympic Games got underway at the Aquatics Centre. 27 athletes began the 3m springboard prelims with a top 18 finish needed to progress to tomorrow’s semi-finals. 25-year-old Reid, who trains at Dive London under the guidance of Jane Figueiredo, finished on a total of 268.15 points, less than four points separating her from the athlete in 18th place. After a solid first round dive, Reid missed her second dive, a Forward 3½ Somersaults, Pike for which she scored only 35.65 points. Despite this set back, she regained her composure and finished her programme off strongly with a well-executed Forward 2½ Somersaults, 1 Twist, Pike, which gave Reid her highest score of her programme, 63.00 points. Unfortunately, this was just not enough and Reid finished 19th overall. There was similar disappointment for her GB colleague, Scarlett Mew Jensen who finished on 243.25 points. Reid said of her performance, "It is massively frustrating, I'm so disappointed and it is obviously not the result I was hoping for. I made a costly mistake in the 2nd round but fought all the way to the end. I gave it everything but it just wasn't enough. "The depth within that event is so strong, it's amazing. you just can't afford to make a mistake like that when the other girls are diving to that level. I just wasn't able to showcase what I wanted to." Speaking about her Olympic experience and the support she's received from friends and family, Reid finished by saying, "It has been so special and it is a wonder these Games went ahead and are as safe as they are. To be part of this will go down in the history books and to be part of Team GB is always such an honour. "I'm so sorry that is what I had to show for all the hard work everyone has put in behind me. It is not what I wanted, but I appreciate all the support no matter what." China’s defending Olympic champion Tingmao SHING and Han WANG finish the prelims in the 1st and 2nd spots with 350.45 points and 347.25 points respectively and look strong going in the semi-finals with the Canadians Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel in 3rd and 4th. The semi-finals take place on Saturday morning with the finals on Sunday. The schedule and results for the diving meet can be found HERE.
