Shaw through to final on Paralympic debut

Toni Shaw was the first member of the ParalympicsGB swimming team to take to the blocks at the Aquatics Centre as the swimming competition of the Tokyo Paralympic Games got underway.

S9 athlete Shaw, who is coached by Gregor McMillan at the University of Aberdeen, made her Paralympic debut in the first heat of the 400m freestyle where she finished in a time of 4:46.19, which sees her safely into the final.

She said of her race,

“I was pretty nervous for the first race, the first event, but the pool is so lovely and that was really fun. It has been a long wait but to be here in Japan is amazing. The pool is incredible, and the people are so kind.

“I’m trying not to put too much pressure on myself. It’s my first Games so I’m just hoping to swim fast.”

Shaw’s final will be approximately 9.10am (UK time).
