New Year New Job #BecomeASwimTeacher

Scottish Swimming are delighted to launch our New Year #BecomeASwimTeacher campaign that aims to support the rebuilding Scotland’s swim teacher workforce. This will support the delivery of our National Learn to Swim Framework – supported by Scottish Water – delivered across the country by 36 Leisure Trusts and Aquatic Providers.

As part of this campaign, prospective Scottish Swimming Teaching Qualification (SSTQ) candidates are eligible to receive a £50 discount on all places on courses running between January and March 2022. This, coupled with the existing subsidy available from sportscotland, will bring the actual candidate cost down from £550 to £400 for this SCQF Level 7 qualification during this limited period.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Scotland’s swim teaching workforce. The 18-month gap in training and recruitment, coupled with teachers moving on from the industry during this period, saw learn to swim programmes meet premature capacity as pools re-opened in 2021 with significant demand for swim lessons.  The industry is still feeling the effects of this challenge. In fact, in November 2021, 90% of National Framework Partners reported that they were unable to expand their learn to swim programmes due to workforce issues and 75% of Partners were open for recruitment.

In order to realise our vision, ‘everyone can swim’, Scotland’s non-swimmers need you!

Becoming a swim teacher with a National Framework Provider is an exciting and rewarding role and now is the time to consider this career. Gordon Hunter, Scottish Swimming Participation Development Manager, and previous swim teacher, shared his thoughts on the magic of the role:

“Becoming a swim teacher opens up numerous opportunities to develop skills, it challenges you, and most importantly being a swim teacher means you can really make a difference to the lives of the people you are teaching. Swim teachers have a unique role in introducing people of all backgrounds to the joys and benefits of water. Watching a child develop and progress through the National Framework Learn to Swim pathway to become confident, safer, and competent swimmers is simply amazing. Knowing you have played a part in that journey is really special.”

In addition to these appeals of the role, National Framework Providers continue to invest in their swim teachers post-qualification via the provision of regular CPD sessions, while Scottish Swimming provide ongoing support via specific SS Connect opportunities, self-directed ‘How to teach’ CPDs delivered on Brightspace, and access to resources and engagement on Hive Learning.

With competitive rates of pay, various contract options, and opportunities for progression, a role as a swim teacher is perfect for those looking to gain a whole host of life-skills while supplementing their studies, those looking for a longer-term career in the industry and everyone in between!
