Higson Seconded to Coaching Role with University of Stirling Swim Team

Ben Higson is being seconded to the University of Stirling Swim Team and will start his 12 month term on Monday 23 September 2013.

Higson is Head Coach with Dumfries Amateur Swimming Club and only gave up swimming competitively in 2010, having competed for Scotland at the Celtic Tri Nations as well as the US Open Championships.

Speaking about his appointment Higson said,

“I am delighted at this secondment and am grateful to Scottish Swimming and Dumfries & Galloway Council for the opportunity. It comes at a unique time less than a year out from a Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and I am really excited to be working with the team at the University of Stirling, many of whom will be looking to be at the top of their game, come the trials next year.”

Ally Whike, Performance Director of Scottish Swimming, also commented,

“Ben has demonstrated his skills as a coach by guiding a relatively young squad at Dumfries and taking them to a top 5 finish in the club rankings at the Scottish Gas National Age Groups Championships back in April.

“This is a great opportunity for him to develop further as a coach and support the swimmers based at the University of Stirling as they head into 2014 and a Home Games.”

Olly Driver, Active Schools and Community Sport Manager also spoke of Ben’s secondment,:-

Dumfries and Galloway council are delighted to support Ben’s Secondment to Scottish Swimming.  The experience that Ben will gain by working alongside the country’s elite coaches and Athletes in the build up to the Commonwealth Games will be invaluable. Whilst we will miss him here in Dumfries and Galloway over the next 12 months I am sure that our swimmers will without doubt benefit upon Ben’s return from this fantastic career development opportunity that he has been given.
